How Primers Make a Huge Difference

Over the years, I have learned tons of tricks on how to make makeup last. Primer can make the difference between foundation melt down and successfully long lasting flawless skin. Primers are also a great way to prep the skin for foundation because they create a smooth surface, filling in lines and pores, and, depending on the formula, mattifying certain areas of the skin which will ultimately look better in photos. The determining factor in choosing a primer depends on skin type.

Choosing Primers

If you have oily, combination, or problematic skin, a mattifying primer is the way to go. My favorite is Boots No7 Mattifying Primer to cut shine. It acts like spackle so the rest of your makeup won’t move around or become patchy and even smoothes over breakouts for a better foundation application. If you have dry skin, try a moisturizing formula to add a glow. I like Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Primer to quench the skin without feeling heavy over moisturizer. Smashbox has also ingeniously created their Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer which is suitable for all skin types. This product is awesome because it is specially formulated for that delicate under eye area and fills in fine lines. If you are looking for a product that does it all, the best primer I have found is Chella’s Skin Firming Serum Daily Primer which is my holy grail product for any skin type. It fills in lines and pores, tightens the skin, and even makes breakouts less noticeable. Use a thin layer before moisturizer for best results.

Primer Tips

As with any primer, less is more. Remember to only use a thin layer of product concentrating on your t-zone (the center of the face: forehead, around the nose, and chin). I often hear complaints that primer is too thick or that it rolls off when applied. This means that too much product is being used. And, yes, it is fine to apply primer with your fingers as the warmth of your hands will help it absorb into the skin.

Hope this helps clear up any questions you had about primer. Thanks so much for reading and stay beautiful!

Best Wishes,

Audrey
