Today I returned Cadiz, Spain, the home of Dad’s last request. In a word, bittersweet — and remarkable. I found the exact spot of his last sighting. Somethings had changed but not everything. I believe all of the people in the photo below have moved on from Turisme de Cadiz and their office had a new location. My plan was to catch dad up with my life after 14 years. Done. I planned to buy him a beer over a seafood paella but I forgot to buy him the beer.

For those who don’t know the full story, his last request was to return home to Cadiz, Spain, and scattered while Ave Maria was sung. I fulfilled this wish with enough mistakes to fill a book — one which I eventually wrote (yes, on Amazon right now at a big discount this month).

After my talk with Dad and the train ride back to Seville, Morgana and I went to the market to pick up some food for the train ride to Madrid tomorrow. Out in front was the guy I had seen busking the last couple of nights. He was playing Ave Maria. It killed me in the same way it did years before.

20 minutes later, we were having tapas and I was complaining about how I had forgotten to buy dad a beer. Then a shabby and clearly drunk guy walked up and asked me to buy him a beer. In my self-importance, I shooed him away. Five minutes after he was gone I realize what had happened. I bought that beer and asked the waitress give it to the next thirsty guy and tell him it was a gift from Dave.

Missing you, dad!
